Sunblock Review : Mentholatum Acnes UV Tint & Parasol

I bought this sunblock at Giant. The price is IDR 36,000 for 30 g, so it's affordable. It has SPF 30 & PA++, very suitable for outdoor activity. It has mild fragrance.

The number of "+" sign indicates the effectivity of sunblocks to protect the skin from UV A rays. I've described about UV rays & sunblock facts here

source :

Ingredients : isopropyl methylphenol 0,1%, stearyl glycyrrhetinate 0,05%, di-alpha-tocopheryl acetate, Mg L-ascorbyl-2-phosphate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, rosemary extract, siliconized micro particle zinc oxide 10%, titanium 8,6%, siliconized talc, mica, titanium (Cl 77891), yellow iron oxide (Cl 77492), red iron oxide (Cl77491), black iron oxide (CL 77499), Perfume, water

Who may like this product :
  • People with oily skin. It has light texture, can absorb excess oil
  • People with acne problem. It contains isopropyl methylphenol as antibacterial agent & stearyl glycyrrhetinate to reduce redness of pimples
  • People who love multifunctional product. It can used as sunblock, acne medication, & makeup base/light foundation (since it's colored)
  • People who love matte finishing
What I like from this product :
  • It's a SPF 30 PA++ sunblock, enough for outdoor activity
  • The texture is light, non sticky
  • It can be used as light foundation to cover uneven skin tone (but not effective to cover dark circles/dark spots)
  • It doesn't break me out
  • Affordable price, easy to get
What I dislike from this product :
  • Texture : It dries out my skin (>_< because my skin type is normal-dry)
  • Packaging : it's difficult to get the content out, the tube hole is too small. We should squeeze it hard
  • Color effect : it gives ashy finishing because I have tan skin
Repurchase : maybe yes
Rating : 3 of 5

This sunblock is very easy to get, it's available in any drugstore. The sunblock cream has 2 types of SPF (15 and 33). I prefer SPF 33 due to my outdoor activities. Some people dislike the packaging. It looks like ointment, not cute at all. But it doesn't matter, the content is more important. I still think this product is great although it's a bit pricey (IDR 50,000 for 20 g >_<). This sunblock is waterproof & PABA free.

source :

Ingredients : Octyl methoxycinnamate, oxybenzone, microtitanium ioxide, methyl benzilidene camphor, butyl methoxy dibenzoil methane, cetyl alcohol, tocopherol acetate, sodium lauryl sulphate, propyl paraben, methyl paraben, red iron oxide Cl 77491, yellow iron oxide Cl 77492, aloe vera, purified water

  • Oxybenzone  : may cause disruption of hormones, prohibited for pregnant women
  • Sodium lauryl sulphate : comedogenic ingredient, not suitable for oily skin
  • Parabens (propyl & methyl paraben) : as preservative agents to prevent microorganism growth. Parabens have bad reputation that they can disrupt endocrine system & cause cancer. Some studies didn't prove parabens cause cancer, but they were easily detected among cancerous cells, but the result called out for more investigation. Pregnant women should avoid parabens because it can affect fetal growth.
Who may like this product :
  • People who have dry skin (me!)
  • People who can't accept fragrance in skincare
  • People who need waterproof sunblock for swimming
  • People who want multifunctional product. It can be used as sunblock, moisturizer, and makeup base.
Who may dislike this product :
  • People who have oily, acne prone skin
  • Pregnant women, since this sunblock contains oxybenzone & parabens
  • People who want nice coverage. This sunblock can't give any coverage to hide uneven skin tone & dark spots
What I like from this product :
  • Can be used as moisturizer & makeup base. It moisturizes my skin well & make my face powder last longer. It's a bit sticky at first, but can absorb into skin some minutes after applying
  • It gives healthy pinkish color on my skin
  • Fragrance free & PABA free
  • Waterproof
What I dislike from this product :
  • It's a bit heavy to wear during hot weather, it feels sticky under extreme sun exposure
  • A bit expensive (IDR 50,000 for 20 g)
Repurchase : yes

Facts About Sunscreen & Sunblock

UV A vs UV B

Picture below tells about the wavelength & hazard to human skin that may caused by radiation of UV A and UV B

Sunscreen or Sunblock ?

The different terms between sunscreen & sunblock depends on the ingredients, but both can provide UV A & UV B rays protection.

How it works
By being absorbed into the skin & change UV rays wavelength into less harmful energy

By coating the skin. Sunblock ingredients block the UV rays from reaching the skin
Characteristics related to sunlight
Sunscreen ingredients may deteriorate at a faster rate once exposed to sunlight. Therefore, UV rays can still be absorbed into skin

Sunblock reflects the UV rays away
Heavy sweating & towelling off can wear off the sunscreen
Depends on the waterproof characteristics. Reapplying sunblock is necessary after swimming

Sunscreen & Sunblock Ingredients

The picture can be explained by this table

Protection from UV B
Protection from UV A
Physical Ingredients

Titanium dioxide
Short wave UV A

Zinc dioxide

The best broad spectrum protection

Chemical Ingredients

Para Amino Benzoic Acid (PABA)

How much SPF should I use?

FACTS : Higher SPF doesn't provide better protection. High SPF will lead your skin exposed by more chemical ingredients. You should know that :
  • SPF 15 product blocks about 94% of UVB rays
  • SPF 30 product blocks 97% of UVB rays
  • SPF 45 product blocks about 98% of rays

Actually SPF that we need depends on UV index. UV index determines how long the skin can last before sunburn occurs.

Dermatologists recommend SPF 15 for indoor activity & SPF 30 for outdoor activity.
  • apply to dry skin, 15 - 30 minutes before sun exposure
  • re-apply after towelling off/swimming/heavy sweating
  • re-apply every 2 hours
